10/20: Dead Ringers

10/20: Gotta do a Cronenberg film every year! Tonight's film was Dead Ringers, a Cronenberg film I hadn't yet seen. This movie is more thriller than horror and, despite what I had heard, not the cream of the crop of Cronenberg's work (I mean, it's no Videodrome; then again few things are).

Dead Ringers follows two very odd twins (both played by Jeremy Irons) who are fertility specialists. Things begin to get weird when one of the twins gets hooked on drugs and becomes fixated on "mutant women." Yes, how very Cronenberg. What isn't very Cronenberg though, and really where the movie suffers, is it never pushes that weird factor into overdrive. It keeps getting close and shows some of Cronenberg's signature body horror and fixation with the bizarre nature of sex, but never fully tips the scales and suffers for it. The ending too wasn't super clear and I was left wondering. Maybe it requires a repeat watch, but ultimately this is a fairly underwhelming Cronenberg film.

6/10
