10/14: Jaws

Movie for yesterday:

10/14: For today's horror flick I threw it back to a classic, Jaws. What more can honestly be said about this movie that hasn't already been said? It's everything right with a monster movie minus all the cheese. This movie spawned countless other monsters movies that span camp to actually pretty damn good, but with Jaws Spielberg captures something that I don't think has ever been captured again. The shark is legitimately terrifying, a horror that lurks just beneath the water out of reach (thank god the shark animatronic was such a pain in the ass that they had to hide it more often than not). It's an unstoppable embodiment of nature and as such cannot be controlled, no matter how much we try, by human forces. The metaphors of this film don't stop there and I think that's Spielberg's biggest success here: Jaws thinks far beyond just a shark eating people.

Truly, Jaws is and will always stand as the pinnacle of monster movies. Spielberg created a true masterpiece.

10/10
