Hell House LLC

Today's horror flick was another found footage flick, Hell House LLC. I think we can all agree that found footage is an overdone technique that's beyond played out. Case in point: I think this might be the 4th (?) found footage film I've watched this month. That said, I'm happy to say that Hell House LLC (an incredibly dumb title, by the way) actually (mostly) does everything right with found footage. I always hold up Paranormal Activity (the film, not the franchise) as the poster child for what good found footage is. Yeah, it's popular, but it's good, shut up, you're wrong. Hell House LLC (seriously, LLC?) doesn't manage to be as good but it's still pretty strong.

A few friends work in the haunted house attraction business and find an abandoned hotel that would make a perfect location for their new attraction. Turns out the hotel has a dark history that comes back to haunt them. Badabingbadaboom. Despite a relatively typical storyline the movie manages to scare and genuinely freaked me out at points (even at 11 AM in the morning). The ending is a bit expected and cliche, but the lead up of a freaky, moving-by-itself clown, ghostly cult thing, creepy white-eyed chick, and public horror of a murder in front of tons of people is creative and scary. Hell House LLC (for serial you guys, I hate that title) belongs amongst the better movies of the found footage genre and despite flaws is a great late night horror flick.

8.5/10
