10/24:Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Yesterday's film:

10/24: Today's horror was Invasion of the Body Snatchers, a classic that I've somehow missed through all these years of the binge and other horror watching. Man, what a stellar horror film. This movie has everything right with body/alien horror, right up there with The Fly and Videodrome. The movie revolves around alien spores that have fallen to earth and are slowly making replicants of people, except they're devoid of emotion. Donald Sutherland, a food safety inspector, beings discovering the dire problem and tries to stop it before it's too late for humanity. He's joined by an incredibly odd but awesome cast of Jeff Goldblum, Leonard Nimoy (so awesome), and Robert Duvall uncredited as a swinging priest.

Like, literally on a swing you guys. I was like, "Holy shit, is that Robert Duvall?" I kept waiting for him to come back into the movie but nope. He's literally on a swing looking creepy for three seconds and that's it.

The movie has incredible, realistic special effects and the implications of the film are horrifying. What if we were taken over and looked exactly the same with only minor differences? Would you think your friend who was saying their husband wasn't their husband was crazy? This begs even bigger questions that the movie tackles: what makes us human? If we could rid ourselves of all the hate and violence in the world but in the process rid ourselves of all the love an joy, should we? What is the nature of free will? This is deep thinking horror, something that I think is far too few and far between with modern horror.

I positively loved this movie, and it's a crime that it's taken me so long to see it. This will easily go down as one of my favorites; I can't even be all that snarky about it. Plus, and probably most of all, that ending though. With a simple scream, pointed finger, and open mouth, I was chilled to the bone.
