It Follows

This is yesterday's film as I have, yet again, fallen behind.

10/8: For tonight's film I watched It Follows. Man... I can't say enough good things about this film and it's easily one of the best new horror films I've seen in a long time. It had similar hype surrounding it like The Babadook, but unlike the The Babadook, it doesn't let those expectations down.

It Follows follows (yeah, I know) Jay, a young woman who is doing what many a young woman (or young person for that matter) does: meeting someone of the opposite sex, dating them, and eventually having sex in the back seat of a car. Ah, young love. However, Jay's hook-up ends up giving her some unwanted baggage in the form of her boyfriend drugging her, tying her to a wheelchair in an abandoned parking structure, and telling her that he's passed "it" on to her. "It," of course, is an unknown being that can take on the form of any person, find you anywhere, will beeline straight for you at a slow walking pace, and if it touches you, you die. I hope writing that in text form does the creepiness of "It" justice, because holy hell, "It" is terrifying. I'll just leave it there; anything else would spoil what is really a brilliant little movie.

If "It" sounds like an STD it's because essentially it is; the whole movie is a sort of warning about the implications of sex. "It" transfers via sex and is unrelenting; you can't escape it and it will always find you, slowly, slowly, no matter where you are. On the subject of "It," "It" is genuinely original and terrifying. A mishmash of the classic slow-moving zombie and Michael Myers-style slasher, "It" is somewhat innocuous as it takes on the form of anyone but this is what makes it so chilling. You find yourself as the viewer constantly searching around for "It" coming after Jay, looking for it in the background constantly. The camera plays with this too, constantly keeping you on the alert.

The movie looks and sounds amazing too, especially for such an atmospheric horror film. The color pops and the use of wide angle is gorgeous. It also allows the movie to be horrifying during the day too, a thing too few horror movies utilize. As for sound, the soundtrack is stellar and despite being wholly original it harkens back to 80s classics (like the movie as a whole), namely John Carpenter with Halloween.

There's so much more I could say about the good in this movie but I'll shut up now. The only reason honestly that it doesn't get a perfect score is some confusion in a few points in the story, but honestly, this film is a damn near perfect original horror flick. Go see it u guyz.

9.5/10
