Piranha 3D
Alright, so here's the deal: I have fallen WAY behind on the horror movie watching as I've been stupid busy, so here's the movie from two days ago. I unfortunately don't have a movie for yesterday or today (being an extra on Better Call Saul will cause such things), but that just means double features later in the month!
10/3: For today's film I watched Piranha 3D, a movie that I had seen previously (and had been an inclusion in the binge back in 2012). Honestly, my review since then hasn't changed much. Piranha 3D is really everything you could want from a creature feature; as the tagline of the movie says: sea, sex, and blood. Violence interspersed with boobies and boobies interspersed with violence. Occasionally those boobies belong to a porn star. Is it a great movie in the classical sense? No. But it knows exactly what is and excels at that. There's piranhas killing well-endowed barely-clothed chicks and murdering or otherwise maiming brainless bros. It is what it is and it's good at it.
This time 'round, though, and maybe it's just me maturing like a fine wine with age, but the sex/violence marriage was something I thought a lot more about. It wasn't just something that I so easily laughed at and moved on with my life but I wondered about why these things are joined so often for us as humans. Horror does this especially; it revels in sexualized violence but as that same time must condemn those who are "loose" or otherwise open with their bodies/sexuality. Look at nearly any slasher. The final female is the pure-hearted virgin while all those brutally murdered are the "sluts" (man or woman) for lack of a better word. This movie does the same. It glorifies and showcases wonton sex while at the same reserving condemnation and judgement for it.
I don't claim to have an answer to the question I'm asking but I still found myself asking it. At the end of the day though my rating of the movie doesn't change and, existential ponderings aside, Piranha 3D is damn entertaining.
Ignore the guy who's getting all deep 'n' shit.
8/10
