May and The Others

So I have fallen crazy behind, so here's my movies from two days ago and yesterday:

10/27: Tonight's film was May, a movie about a young woman from a rough childhood who is struggling to connect to the world. She works at a veterinary clinic with the guy who runs around naked with Sasha Baron Cohen in Borat and Anna Faris, a lesbian with the hots for her. May also meets a man who she becomes obsessed with (well, at least his hands) and struggles to show love and affection for in a normal way.

May is classic story along the same lines of Carrie and you find yourself (despite how effing weird she is) feeling for May and her separation from society. She doesn't fit and you feel for her. The twist at the end sort of messes this up (yeah, turns out May is unbelievably whackadoo, serial killer status), but even then you kinda root for her.

Ultimately May isn't a brand new idea but it breathes enough fresh, creepy air into it to stand out. May is creepy as hell but you love her. That adorable serial murderer.

7.5/10

10/28: For tonight's film I watched The Others, a ghost film that treads new territory than it's ghost-movie predecessors. It's not always effective, but I have to say I enjoyed it for the most part. Set shortly after World War II, The Others takes place in a country home where the mother is overprotective of her children. Some new servants move into the home and strange happenings begin to occur.

The twist at the end in many ways subverts and flips around the typical ghost story and this is where the biggest strength of the film lies. That said, I felt that throughout the movie the scaffolding to get us to this ending wasn't quite enough to support such a big twist. There isn't enough of a breadcrumb trail along the way to hold up this ending. On top of that, the movie doesn't stay true enough to it's own world either; there's a lot of deviation and this causes the ending, despite the surprise, to give you a little "ehhhhhhhhhh" moment. I still liked the twist and the movie as a whole but had to overlook some of these flaws along the way to truly enjoy it.

In a nutshell: an entertaining ghost film with a surprising, but flawed, twist.

8/10
