Fire in the Sky
Yesterday's flick:
10/26: For tonight's horror film I watched Fire in the Sky, a film that I unwittingly watched not knowing it wasn't really a horror movie. Well, hey, whatcanyado. I was in the mood for an alien horror and this one popped up on a list of the scariest ever made. And hey, here we are.
While Fire in the Sky isn't on the whole a horror movie (more of a mystery drama deal) it certainly has some horror elements. The film is based on the true story of an Arizona logger who is abducted by an alien spacecraft leaving his 6 coworkers behind. They are blamed for his murder until he finally reappears naked and disoriented a few days later. Under hypnotic regression he recalls what was done to him by the alien beings, experiments and waking up in their craft.
The meat of the movie revolves around the 6 other men being suspected of murder, which feels much less interesting than the aspects in the alien spacecraft. This may be due to the fact that I was in the market for a very different type of movie, but ultimately with how creepy and horrifying the alien scenes are the rest feels pretty humdrum. The depiction of the aliens is so refreshingly alien without attempt to explain and this is the film's greatest strength. Too often aliens in alien films have very human motivations and explanations; this movie is quite the opposite and all the better for it. The aliens are alien and unexplainable.
I wish this movie had more of the alien aspect but maybe at the end of the day that isn't what the movie is all about. It tickled my alien abduction bug (the abduction scene is done marvelously well), but at the end of the day I just wish there was more of it.
Also, man, despite all the horrifying stuff done to this dude by the aliens... man, I want to abducted.
7/10
