10/7: The Head Hunter

10/7

Ok, it should be no surprise to anyone that knows me that I have a soft spot for medieval horror movies. As a childhood Lord of the Rings fan and avid Dungeons and Dragons player/Dungeon Master, medieval fantasy horror movies feel like the perfect marriage of two things that hold my heart.

With how awesome medieval horror can be, it's a woefully under represented genre. Enter The Head Hunter. Focused on a monster hunter in a medieval fantasy world (think The Witcher) who lost his daughter to the monster who got away, he dedicates himself to avenging her death. Shot on only $30,000, the movie is a remarkable achievement for its limitations. It looks good, it's damn cool in a very metal way, and it revels in simplicity. Sure, it shows the limitations of it's budget (i.e. shooting around the monsters and their respective battles to avoid the cost), but its just so awesome and fun I could care less.

Then there's that ending... like damn. Slick, cool, surprising, and, yes, badass, I truly dug it. You know an ending is solid when its stuck with you for a few days and this one has. That title? Has a whole lot more meaning.

9/10
