10/29: The McPherson Tapes (UFO Abduction)

I'm done trying to catch up at this point, so, ya know... whatevs. Anywho:

10/29: For today's movie, if you can even call this a movie, I went for probably the most obscure movie I've ever seen, Binge or not: The McPherson Tapes (also sometimes called UFO Abduction). The Blair Witch Project is often mentioned as the originator of the found footage film, but if you want the true OG, it's gotta be this one. The McPherson Tapes is a found footage film in the absolute truest sense of the word. It's about an hour long and half the time (honestly, more than half the time) you have no clue what you're looking at. In fact, it's so found footage that still until this day some UFO enthusiasts point to this film as evidence of extraterrestrial life.

Being found footage is less of a creative choice in this film and more of a necessity of an incredibly small budget. And honestly? It reads that way most of the time. Don't get me wrong, it feels very real, like watching a genuine old home video that you found in somebody's attic. Plus, it is genuinely freaky from time to time wondering where the aliens will pop up next. Overall though, The McPherson Tapes is a victim of its budget and other than being notable for being one of the first found footage films it's pretty forgettable. It's worth noting as a first experiment in a subgenre that would create some pretty solid films but it doesn't stand with the greats of what it created.

6/10

(this movie is so obscure there's no trailer for it. Yup)
