10/23: Eyes Without a Face

Still working on being crazy behind on my reviews. Imma keep this 'un brief, because I gotta catch up damn it. Here's my movie from a few days ago:

10/23: Today we go to a movie that's been on my list for literally years, Eyes Without a Face. A French-Italian classic from 1960, Eyes Without a Face is a masterclass in the type of horror that would dominate the genre far in the future.

The plot revolves around a doctor whose daughter was in a disfiguring accident. In an attempt to save her face he kidnaps similar looking young women and takes their faces to graft onto his daughter's. It's a horrifying concept that perhaps we've been deadened to by the sheer amount of movies that replicated it; I mean,  The Human Centipede (unfortunately) comes to mind. The idea of being taken for nefarious purposes and being operated on is part and parcel to horror, with Eyes Without a Face being the pioneer. If you're patient, it still totally holds up 60 years later as an effective and unsettling tale.

9/10
