10/26: Apostle

Horror film from yesterday:

10/26

Today's flick was the Netflix film Apostle. A young ex-missionary is sent on a mission to save his sister who has been taken for ransom by a cult. This cult resides on a remote island, started by three exiled convicts who wished to create a place of plenty and peace away from the British crowd. They're, obviously, not friendly to outsiders, and seem to worship an old woman nature goddess who has provided them with their abundance. Recently, though, this abundance has worn out and the residents of the island are beginning to feel the desperation of potential starvation. Hey, I rhymed!

If that whole plot sounds really familiar, well, it's because it's basically (not even basically, totally) taken straight from The Wicker Man. I don't mean the shit Nicolas Cage version either, but the OG 1973 cult-fest. I think that's the biggest problem with Apostle: if you've seen The Wicker Man, you will inevitably compare the two because at their core they're the same movie. It adds some new bells and whistles and maybe modernizes a 70s story, but the only people who I think this movie is really for is people who haven't seen The Wicker Man. Ultimately though, because I have seen it, as cool and good as this movie can be, I was left at the end wondering why.

Apostle is by no means a bad movie and is a solid period cult tale. On one level I'm glad it's providing modern audiences with The Wicker Man story, but at the end of the day the movie just doesn't seem to have a point if you've seen The Wicker Man.
